A few days after STS-82’s launch, the Discovery astronauts began a process called SMOV. The mission’s goal was to repair and replace faulty parts of the HST. During the process, the astronauts noticed cracks in the telescope’s thermal blanketing. Some of the cracks were eight inches (20 cm) long, not tiny spider cracks.
